The Maasai people have lived for centuries on the plains of the Masai
Mara in Kenya, Africa. A proud, handsome and nomadic race their lives
were traditionally devoted to protecting and caring for cattle.
Indeed according to folklore, God had bequeathed all cattle in the
world to the Maasai. Known for dressing in predominantly red robes,
Maasai men and women have for generations adorned themselves with an
array of vibrantly coloured beaded jewellery.
As tradition dictates that male Maasai are brave hunters and guides, so the Maasai women work hard taking care of their families, the cattle and the vagaries of daily life on the Mara. As the modern world threatens to encroach on this ancient people, the women of the tribes have quietly recognised that there is a demand for their unique handmade beadwork products giving them a new sense of independence as well as an independent income.
